Marginal Art Fair Fukushima Hirono: A Celebration of Art and Community

This weekend marks an exciting event—the “Marginal Art Fair Fukushima Hirono,” held in Hirono Town, Fukushima Prefecture. After months of preparation, the moment has finally arrived.

Behind the Scenes: A Collaborative Effort

The organizing committee has been working tirelessly to bring this art fair to life. This is our first time hosting an event of this scale, so the journey has been one of trial and error. Fortunately, with the expertise and connections of Mr. Akamatsu from Value Creation Kyodo, we managed to turn our vision into reality.

As the head of operations, Seitaro Design has developed cposter and flyer design, web management, and media promotion. While there is always room for growth, we aim to nurture this fair as a spark for future endeavors.

My Contributions: “In Praise of Shadows” and New Works

For this exhibition, I’ll be presenting an installation titled “In Praise of Shadows” alongside several new pieces from the “Voice within the Voice” series. “In Praise of Shadows” was first exhibited in Amsterdam in 2018, but this is the first time the complete work will be shown in Japan. This piece combines Mino Washi paper, minimal music by Takahisa Mitsumori (Mergrim), and a custom fragrance created specifically for the installation.

The work will be displayed in a unique setting: the men’s bathroom at the Futatsunuma General Park “Training Camp Inn.” This exhibition zone explores the theme of “letters,” with additional installations such as Seika Tachi’s katakana glitch-inspired piece in the changing room. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience “In Praise of Shadows” in Japan.

Responding to Global Themes

My new work in the “Voice within the Voice” series responds to Ukrainian artist Maria Proshkowska’s Fragmented Dreams 4 & 7, themed on the Chernobyl nuclear accident. This piece represents my most politically charged work to date, reflecting my deep engagement with Maria’s powerful art.

Highlights of the Art Fair

In addition to my work, the Margin Art Fair showcases many extraordinary pieces:

These are just a few highlights among the many incredible works gathered in Hirono Town for this two-day event.

Upcoming Exhibition: Urban Break in Korea

In other news, I’ve been invited to participate in Urban Break, a street art festival in Korea. We plan to create a new series titled “Fossils from the Future,” inspired by symbolic consumption in Korea. If you have insights to share, feel free to let me know.
